Sister Tearyn Upinjustice

Tearyn’s journey from the Deep South to Washington, D.C., is a poignant testament to the transformative power of aspiration and community. Born in a region steeped in historical and social complexities, Tearyn’s formative years were marked by stark contrasts: the oppressive atmosphere of segregation, the toil of migrant workers, and the lingering shadows of a legacy defined by her grandfather’s position as the Grand Dragon in the KKK. These elements coalesced in the backdrop of her childhood in her sleepy little southern town known as the “Cucumber Capital of The World,” where her dreams of becoming the “Pickle Princess of Hardee County” were emblematic of a yearning for a life of glamour and service that seemed, at the time, out of reach.

Her life took a significant turn as a child while spending time in her town’s tiny library; She learned about the Sisterhood COMPLETELY BY CHANCE!! . She spent nearly every day after school there. Reading, dreaming and educating herself about that great big world that was on the other side of those dry county lines. As luck would have it, she stumbled upon a news article about a group of gay men in San Francisco, who dressed up as nuns, ran around on roller skates, and were fighting for the rights of gay people and anyone considered to be second class and less than. AIDS was in its early days then, and the Sisters were there to help those fighting the disease. Showering them with love, compassion and inclusiveness. She was so touched by that story that she swore to herself that one day, she’d help too! Fueled by determination and a relentless quest for meaning, Tearyn eventually left behind the confines of her rural, backwoods upbringing.

Several years after moving to DC, she had the wonderful luck to meet two fabulous people who have become not just friends, but family! Together, they decided to found the DC House!!! She and her companions strive to uplift marginalized communities and raise funds for countless charities and causes. Through art, travel, and a deep commitment to inclusivity, Tearyn has created a vibrant tapestry of love and resilience, redefining her narrative and embracing a brighter future and fighting against the injustices that today’s society is facing.
